OZ Lifting Launches Dynamometer Lever Hoist

OZ Lifting has launched a third lever hoist range—Dyno-Hoist, a dynamometer-equipped product from 0.75 to 9 tons capacity.

The Winona, Minnesota-based manufacturer is the first to bring a lever hoist that includes a dynamometer to the North American market. It is available in 0.75, 1.5, 3, 6, and 9 tons capacity, matching the ranges of the company’s industrial and premium (overload protected) lever hoist offerings.

Dyno-Hoist, named by Richard Miller, sales manager, gives users a real-time reading of the load (in kilograms or pounds) they are applying to the hoist, whether it be a lifting or pulling application. An overload alert is triggered at 126%; the American Society of Mechanical Engineers requires that when a hoist is repaired or recertified, it gets tested at 125% of the rated capacity. OZ Lifting wanted to be sure that the hoist could be tested to that capacity without timing out. Against best practice advice, users could operate it beyond that point, but they would have no knowledge of the load being applied.

Steve Napieralski, president at OZ Lifting, said: “There is nothing out there in the marketplace like this hoist. I don’t think there is a specific market for it, but we recently displayed it at two industrial trade shows and there was specific interest from the aviation industry, as they must tension parts for testing and need to know the exact weight. It will be useful in any application where you need to know the weight of the load being applied to the hoist. Where you would have previously needed to use a shackle, dynamometer, and hoist, with Dyno-Hoist, you gain a significant amount of headroom because the load cell is an integral part of the unit.”

OZ Lifting’s industrial line of lever hoists already offers a good choice if users know the weight of the load. The premium line, meanwhile, is based on the same hoist but has overload protection. This has proved useful if the load weight is unknown, as the overload protection will activate at approximately 50% above the load rating. Notably, Dyno-

Hoist’s dynamometer fitting itself can retrofit to either of the industrial or premium lever hoists. If a user has one of those models, they can purchase the load cell and complete installation.

The net weight of the units (head only), is 16.5, 27.94, 45.1, 66, and 96.80 lbs. in order of capacity, while the effort to lift the safe working load (SWL) in each instance is 31.4, 49.5, 72, 76.5, and 81 lbs. The first three models in the range have one fall of chain and the 6 and 9 tons versions, two and three falls respectively. Other features include all-steel construction; steel handle with rubber grip; zinc-plated load chain; forged alloy steel hooks; and fully-enclosed gearing. Dyno-Hoist meets or exceeds CE, ASME B30.21, and AS 1418.2 standards. Standard AA batteries offer a run time of 150 hours, but the product can be plugged into a 115/1/60 outlet. Each hoist is load tested and arrives with a test certificate, one-year warranty, and a free set of latches.

OZ Lifting will show a variety of davit cranes, hoists, and lifting components at this month’s Associated Wire Rope Fabricators (AWRF) Product Information Exhibition (PIE), which takes place at the Marriott Marquis Houston.

OZ Lifting Launches Spark Resistant Range

OZ Lifting has launched two spark resistant products—a chain hoist and push beam trolley—both available from 0.5-ton to 10-ton capacity.

The Winona, Minnesota-based manufacturer has targeted the products at applications where there are gas or dust particles that could create a spark. Typical markets include oil and gas, wastewater, paper, mining, and others where an explosive atmosphere exists.

The products are launched as a complete capacity range—0.5 ton, 1 ton, 2 ton, 3 ton, 5 ton, 10 ton—that covers most likely applications. As with other manual chain hoists in the catalog, 10 ft., 15 ft., 20 ft., and 30 ft. heights of lift are offered as standard, but custom lengths are available on request. All chain hoists and push beam trolleys are painted white, but distributors and end users might re-color them to suit protocols at specific facilities.

Steve Napieralski, president at OZ Lifting, said: “The products go hand in hand. We saw a need in the market for spark resistant manual chain hoists, and if you are going to offer them, you typically will be hanging the equipment from a trolley that also needs to be spark resistant. However, the products can work independently of each other. You might have a situation where the manual chain hoist doesn’t need to travel down an I-beam and is fixed in one location. And the trolley can accommodate either one of our manual spark resistant hoists or one that is powered.”

Explosive atmospheres
Potentially explosive atmospheres exist in many areas of industry. These explosive zones carry extremely strict guidelines and equipment requirements that standard catalog items cannot meet.

Both the new chain hoists and trolleys are manufactured in compliance with the EU’s explosion-proof standard ATEX94/9/EC and Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. They can operate at explosion levels EX II2 GD c IIIC T135 C and are suitable for use in Zones 1 and 2 (gas) as well as Zones 21 and 22 (dust). The term “explosion proof” usually applies to electric-driven products, versus “spark resistant” for those operated mechanically, as Napieralski reiterated.

Key features of the hoists include unique hand wheel design; minimal load lifting effort; fully enclosed gearing; stainless steel or copper components; totally enclosed gearing; and suitability to lifting and pulling applications. The push beam trolleys, meanwhile, boast copper-plated trolley wheels and lifting bale; copper riveted identification tags; precision ball bearing trolley wheels; anti-drop plate; and compatibility with most I-, S-, and W-beams. Both products come with individual test certificate and serial number.

OZ Lifting will show its full range of davit cranes, hoists, and lifting components at MODEX 2022 (Booth B2926) on 28-31 March at Atlanta’s Georgia World Congress Center.

Rooftop Davit Crane Makes Building Maintenance Easier And Safer

The 1,200-lb. capacity Davit Crane, model OZ1200DAV, sourced from OZ distributor Sharrow Lifting Products, was the latest in a series of products and services delivered to the facility by Hilmerson, which has provided rooftop fall protection solutions and training for the organization since 2011.

Hilmerson has worked with its partners to pioneer continued improvement of working at height best practices at the site and ensure compliance with OSHA and other standards.

The hospital is an ACS verified Level I Trauma Center for both children and adults, and was Minnesota’s first pediatric trauma center to gain that status. The facility will use the crane on a regular (monthly) basis as contractors and third parties perform preventative maintenance on equipment, such as changing filters on rooftop units, air conditioning, fans, and condensers.

Debra Hilmerson, president and CEO at Hilmerson, said: “The OZ unit is one component in an overall, ongoing roof access safety and maintenance project. It is a user-friendly, easy-to-install solution for a valued customer.”

John Quinn, CEO at Sharrow, said: “We are proud of our long association with Hilmerson. While the crane was installed as a permanent fixture, the end user enjoys the luxury of being able to remove it for storage away from the elements. The crane was fitted towards the corner of the rooftop, where it can add the most material handling capability and coverage to the user.”

The crane is made from a composite material, for which OZ holds a patent on the design. Practically, this means the product does not rust, while the steel components are zinc plated. In this case, the crane is mounted on a socket base—model OZSOC1—that was covered with sheet metal. The total weight of the crane is just 80 lbs., with the heaviest component weighing it at only 43 lbs.
