See What Happens to a Hook When You Overload a Hoist [Video]

I shot a video today that shows what happen to a hook when you overload a hoist.

As you’ll see it becomes a huge safety concern that can go easily unnoticed.

The best way to prevent this from happening is to use hoists with Overload Protection.

Overload protection protects the operator and takes the guesswork out of the weight of the load. If you guessed wrong the hoist will transition into overload.

Going into overload can cost you in 3 ways:

– Injuries
– Lost Production
– Maintenance Costs

Overload Protection helps reduce these costs and risk of injury.

Why Most Portable Davit Cranes Aren’t Really “Portable”

Many of the small Davit Cranes can weigh over 150 lbs., have many pinch points, and need a bucket of tools to assemble, not so portable!

Because of the weight and assembly issues of these cranes most wastewater treatment plants and other industry’s buy multiple cranes to service one lift, the davit usually sits in one place for its life and is used during service or maintenance schedules, there is another way.

Introducing the Compozite Davit Crane by Oz Lifting Products, lightweight , 40% lighter than steel , no tools required and comes complete with a drill drive adapter for a faster lifting option. When broken down the two pieces of crane weigh approximately 40 lbs each.

Also, also by nature the composite material does not rust and the metal parts are all zinc plated for corrosion resistance.

A customer from Trinidad recently sent me some pictures of how he is using the Composite Davit Crane, he has ordered 6 bases for the one crane , he said he saved himself a lot of money because of the true portability of this crane.

A New Coating For Our USA Made Products

When it comes to finding the best way to protect our products from corrosion there are a few important factors that we consider. One of those factors is the durability of the coating.

Powder coating and baked enamel paint are widely used in the industry. They work well, but once scratched through to the metal they leave your equipment vulnerable to rust and the life of your equipment is reduced.

We will continue to use the industry standard coatings on most of our products. But we have decided that we will be electroplating our new USA made steel products. The plating substance we will be using has achieved one of the highest salt spray test results for corrosion resistance in the industry.

The company we have partnered with is one of the best in the industry with over 60 years of experience (family owned). The new plating will also be ROHS compliant. ROHS compliant means that we are plating with substances that meet all the health standards set by the EPA.  (click the following link to learn about all plating  chemicals – http://www.rohsguide.com/rohs-substances.htm )

Also, we thought you may be interested in the plating process. There are many types and uses that you may need to be aware of. I have a link to a document about plating that I think you’ll find informative. Click here to view the plating guide

What Power Plants Can Teach You About Manual Hoist Applications

Have you ever wondered where manual hoists are used in a power plant?  Do you think it would be wise to use a hoist without Overload Protection in such a high risk environment?

Every power plant manager should be looking at using the safest type of lifting gear on the market. OZ lifting is currently used in many types of power plants including nuclear.

Here are a few of the ways our manual hoists are used in power plants. Look them over and see if you have any applications that are similar and could benefit from using a manual hoist with the added safety features.

Hand Chain Hoists

Coal Gun: Small, rugged, design that can be easily moved from location to location.

Turbine Maintenance: Low pull force for easy lifting, allows for micro-movements on critical lifts and installs.

Water-wall Installation and Removal: After plant/construction cranes have moved the panels in place, hand chain hoists used to complete final placement.

Erecting Stacks: Used to move form and catwalk to the next pouring level.

Hand Lever Hoists

Boiler Pipes, Alignment, Welding and Repairs: Durable, lightweight hoists with low handle pull force, true single handed free chain operation.

Air Heater Assembly: Hand chain and lever hoists use.

Do your homework. Look for a hoist that will not let you lift over the rated capacity, Think Safety!!

Hoist Maintenance Guidelines

To comply with OSHA and get years of use out of your hoist you need to have a comprehensive hoist maintenance program, if there is a hoist failure that results in an accident the first thing that will be asked for is your service record.

One of the most common questions we get from our customers is, how often should we perform maintenance and who should be doing it.

Here are some guidelines based on ANSI/ASME B03.21.

Periodic Hoist Inspections

The basis of a sound maintenance program starts with periodic inspections.

Those inspections should be performed based on the amount of use of the hoist and weight of the load being lifted on the following schedule:

Normal Service – Yearly inspection

Service that involves operation with randomly distributed loads within the rated load limit. Or uniform loads less than 65% of rated load for not more than 15% of the time.

Heavy Service- Semi-annually inspections

Service that involves operation within the rated load limit that exceeds normal service.

Severe Service – Quarterly inspections

Service that involves operation within the rated load limit that exceeds normal service.

Who Should Perform Your Hoist Maintenance

Designated Person

A person who is selected or assigned as being competent to perform specific duties to which they are assigned.

Qualified Person

A person that by possession of a recognized degree or certificate of professional standing.

There you have it. With a proper maintenance schedule and Standard Overload Protection you will get many years of safe, durable use out of an Oz Hoist.
